One Small Step by P.B. Kerr

This book is based on the Moon Mission back in the 60's, only this time a 13 year old boy gets to go into the capsule with the chimps who were being trained as part of the mission. It could be one of our 7th or 8th graders....in some wild experiment. This really brings to life the mission and all of the problems that needed to be solved in order to ensure success, not to mention the unknown dangers that needed to be prepared for. Scott, the main character, isn't afraid to try the impossible....but then he's a natural.

Right now I'm reading the book Eclipse. I'm not very far into it yet, but it's very good so far. I recomend it to all.

Six Innings by James Preller

This one is for all those little league players out there or anyone who loves baseball! If you've ever held your breath and paced back and forth when the score is 6-5 in the bottom of the last inning and your team is ahead but the home team is up and the bases are loaded with 2 outs, you know the meaning of intense!! This book by James Preller is a chapter by chapter, play by play, that keeps you riveted until the end.

Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

Just finished this incredible book by Laurie Halse Anderson (Speak, Fever 1793) This is her ultimate coup. I cried, cringed, cheered, and talked back to her suppressor. I cannot wait for the sequel, it is the one of the best, most accessible historical fiction books I have read. Sometimes it is difficult for young adults to identify with time periods, they don't have enough history. But this is so emotional and vivid I think everyone in 7th and 8th grade will get it and love it. Each chapter begins with a documented quote from a diary, most written in 1776, the year it spans. But it is Isabel who you will cheer for with almost nail-biting urgency. Anderson has won the Scott O'Dell Award for historical fiction and is a National Book Award finalist with this book. Write on!! AWESOME!!!

The Falcon's Malteser

When Tim and Nick Diamond are trusted to hold a mysterious package for a dwarf named Johnny Naples, they start to regret ever doing it. They're invited to a meeting with 'The Fat Man', one of the biggest crime bosses in England. He says to hand over the package or else. Nick and Tim decide to pay Johnny Naples a visit to tell him that they don't want anything to do with this package, but then, they hear a gunshot and see a dead corpse of Naples lying in bed. When Tim goes over to inspect the crime, the police come barging in, and Tim gets blamed for Johnny's death and sent to prison. Now Nick has to free Tim from jail, find the Falcon's five-million dollar stash, and the only clue he has is a lone box of Maltesers.

Notes From the Midnight Driver

I've just recently borrowed this book and it is great. It's set it the same high school as Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie, but it's a very different story. Alex Gregory's life seems like it's falling apart. His parents are divorced, and his dad is hooking up with Alex's third-grade teacher. When Alex goes on a drunk-driving spree, his sentence in court is to watch over Solomon Lewis, a very cranky old man who lives in a nearby nursing home. But as time rolls by, Alex starts to become a better person and tries to find out a way to finally make Old Sol happy. With the same laughs as the first book, Notes From the Midnight Driver will make you experience one kid's change from zero to hero.

P.S. I think Jordan has made a third book, but I'm not sure. If someone finds out, leave a comment.

The Diamond Brothers

Most of you probably know Anthony Horowitz by the 'Alex Rider' and 'Gatekeepers' series. But did you know about 'The Diamond Brothers'? I just borrowed one of the books, 'Public Enemy Number Two', from Northland and read it over the weekend. It was a very good book. It was like Alex Rider but instead of a secret agent Nick Diamond (the main character of the book) is a detective. Plus it adds humor and hilarity throughout every chapter. Check it out sometime!

The Luxe

A very good historical fiction novel, The Luxe by Anna Godberson starts the suspense right at the beginning, a great hook to get you reading, and it ends with a series of surprising twists.

Set in 1899, the book follows a wide array of upper- class aristocrats during the high season of teas, balls, and parties with their families and those similar. However, the flirtatious fun of finding her match is interrupted for the well-mannered and somewhat stiff Elizabeth Holland, due to a family crisis after the death of her father. Soon she is being pressured by her mother to marry the richest of the available bachelors, Henry Schoonmaker, going against the wishes of her best friend, Penelope, the wishes of Henry, and of herself. Elizabeth is now in a tragic situation, wanting to disappear with a mysterious and unacceptable lover that only her angered maid knows of, while also wanting to help her family, including her eclectic younger sister, Diana.

This book and the rest of the trilogy, Rumors and Envy, both also written by Godberson, comes recommended to those who enjoy historical fiction. Also, this book is much like A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, another historical fiction about groups of girls going against the high standards of living set for them.

Dave Barry Is From Venus And Mars

This was a hilarious book. You can tell he has a great sense of humor just from the back cover! This is the best non fiction book I've ever read! Read it and you will love it! Everyone will! You will never think about the world the same again!

The 39 Clues

I just got the 4Th book in the series on Friday and I think it was the best one. It was a little complicated and a little hard to follow at times but it was a really great book. This book was written by Jude Watson. This time Amy and Dan are Egypt and it is interesting! The first one is called the Maze of bones!  Go check it out at your library! You'll love it!

Schooled?

I just got a free book at barnes and noble. It's schooled! I haven't started it yet but I want to know if its any good. Has anyone read it? I don't like to read bad books when I know there is another good book I can read. Also you can be entered in a contest to win an autographed lightening thief book at barnes and noble.

THE Sisters Grimm

The new sisters Grimm book just came out. I finished reading it last night. Anyone who has not read The sisters Grimm series is missing out on a lot! In the newest one, The Everafter War, There is a lot of Espionage and treachery. Along with the serious and gloomy, there is the personal life of the main characters, Daphne and Sabrina Grimm and their family. There is a lot of humor! Everafters are fairy tale characters. This book makes you look at fairy tale characters in a new way. In the book Little Red Riding Hood is a Homicidal Lunatic! All in All, The book is a combination of the genres of fantasy, adventure, mystery, and so many more. 

Dead Witch Walking

Dead Witch Walking is a book for all twilight fans and Harry Potter fans! It takes place in an alternate world, of sorts, in Cincinnati where all sorts of dark creatures such as vampires, werewolves, witches, fairies, and pixies all come to party, prowl,.......and, for some, to feed. The main character is Rachel Morgan, a witch, and she works for a parallel version of the FBI. However, Rachel wants to quit to start her own private sleuth business. Little does Rachel know that no one lives more then a week after breaking their contract, and soon she is in a desperate attempt to save her own life as well as her family and friends. This book is an awesome page turner, and dare I say it....better than the Twilight series. You will love this book.

good books

One of my favorite book series is Maximum Ride and Daniel X I cant wait until the next Daniel X comes out July 2 in Britain and the 27 in the US.

Dewey the Small Town Library Cat

This is a great book for cat-lovers! It's about a cat who is taken in by a small town library in Iowa. It's a true--he actually lived in the library and became loved by the entire community. This is a good story that shows how one little animal made a difference!

Books...Books...and More Books

Welcome to Carson Middle School Library's Book Blog. During the summer students who attend Carson or who will be attending next year can post to this blog telling us about a book they have read. Others can comment on the the same book or another.

One that has my vote this year is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Bod had such an interesting life being raised by dead people. His determination to get a gravestone for Liza, the disreputable characters like Abanazer and Jack, the Indigo man and the Sleer, all of these made for a book I could not put down. Here's hoping there is a sequel.
